Non-Gym Fitness Ideas in Cape Town

Best of all, you don’t always have to spend cash to get those washboard abs. Many activities are free, giving you no excuse for not getting off the couch. Some rewarding non-gym fitness ideas in Cape Town include these activities…

CityROCK Cape Town

21 Anson Street, Observatory | day passes & monthly plans

The CityROCK indoor climbing gym offers a tough yet fun workout for all levels. There is a bouldering area as well as high walls, with a variety of climbs available. What makes this a good workout is that it is never the same two climbs in a row. You will use muscles you didn’t know you had while working your mind at the same time. The gym is open every day (except for Christmas and New Year’s Day) and it costs around R105 per adult for a day pass. There are also monthly packages available. Call +27 (0)21 447 1326 for more info.

Sea Point Outdoor Gym

Sea Point Promenade, Beach Road | free!

On the promenade, the outdoor gym makes it far more enjoyable to get that beach body started compared to sweating away in a regular gym. There are a variety of facilities found here, and best of all, it doesn’t cost a cent. In addition to the equipment provided, there is also an obstacle course. You can warm up with a jog on the promenade, or perhaps a game of soccer, rugby or Frisbee on the lawn. Sometimes, there’s also free yoga on offer if you’re lucky. The gym is open all day, every day.

Surfing at Muizenberg

Muizenberg Beach, Beach Road, Muizenberg | various costs

Make the most of the warm Indian Ocean by learning how to surf. There is no doubt that surfing is an excellent way to get fit. It’s also a great way to enjoy those hot summer days. There are a number of surf schools found in Muizenberg, but Gary’s Surf School is the oldest and best-known. All levels are welcome, from complete beginner to those with a bit of experience. Kids and adults are both catered to and prices are reasonable. Call +27 (0)21 788 9839 for more info.

Adventure Boot Camp

Various Locations, City Wide | various monthly plans

For the ladies, Adventure Boot Camp is sure to whip you into shape in time for bikini season. Classes are held at various fields across the city, with smaller groups taking place in all major suburbs. This allows for a better, more personalised environment. The workouts are tough but worth it… in a week or two, you will be glad you started! Boot camps are typically held over a certain period rather than continuing indefinitely – this is a great way to shake things up and get back into a regular fitness routine.

Trail Running & Hiking

Various Routes City Wide | free & paid options

Table Mountain offers plenty of enjoyment for its residents, and for those wanting a serious workout, hiking can be rewarding for the body, mind and soul. Get a group of friends together and aim to take on a new hiking trail each weekend, or join a trail running club to put yourself to the test. Please note however that it is best to run in groups when getting out into the great outdoors. While most runners and hikers safely enjoy their time outdoors, conditions on the mountain can change very quickly and hikers have been known to get lost. Stay safe and only take on routes that you (or someone in your group) are familiar with to some degree.
